Sorte d’idole de son époque, <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none;"><a style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;" href="http://technorati.com/tag/Jean+MERMOZ" rel="tag">Jean MERMOZ</a></span>, meneur d’hommes au caractère bien trempé, était reconnu pour son courage, sa droiture et son intégrité.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Quelques dates de son activité de pilote:<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">- 1920: <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; color: rgb(0, 0, 102); text-decoration: none;"><a style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;" href="http://technorati.com/tag/Jean+MERMOZ" rel="tag">Jean MERMOZ</a></span> s’engage, à 18 ans, pour 4 années dans l’Armée de l’Air.<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">- 1921: Breveté pilote, il est affecté en Syrie où il connaît ses premiers contacts avec le désert (atterrissage forcé et 4 jours de marche).<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">- 1924: Démobilisé avec 600 heures de vol à son actif, il entre au service de la Société <a href="http://www.latecoere.com/">Latécoère</a>. Il est affecté à la ligne aérienne postale Toulouse-Barcelone-Alicante. A cette époque le franchissement des Pyrénées par tous les temps n’était pas une sinécure.<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">- 1926: Il est affecté au tronçon postal Casablanca-Dakar (ligne ouverte en 1923) avec survol du Sahara, lieu de tous les dangers.<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">- 1927: Il inaugure le 10 mai la ligne directe sans escale Toulouse- Saint Louis du Sénégal pour l’Aéropostale qui prend la succession des lignes Latécoère.<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">- 1928: Préparation des vols de nuit entre Rio de Janeiro (Brésil) et Buenos Aires (Argentine). 16 avril, premier vol de nuit.<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">- 1929: Etablissement d’une ligne par dessus la Cordillère des Andes. Au mois de mars accident dans les Andes. 14 juillet ouverture officielle de la ligne.<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">- 1930: Le 12 mai, réalise pour la première fois en 21 heures la liaison Saint-Louis -Natal (3200 km avec 130 kg de courrier) sur monomoteur Laté 28. Il ouvre ainsi une liaison aérienne postale France-Amérique du Sud via la côte africaine. Toulouse et Santiago du Chili (13 400 km) sont ainsi reliés en 108 h et 40 mn dont 20 h d’escales.<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">- 1933: Liaison Paris-Buenos Aires à bord d’un trimoteur, "L’Arc en Ciel". Il réalise le trajet Saint-Louis du Sénégal-Natal à la vitesse moyenne de 227 km/ h.Mise en service de la liaison régulière France-Amérique du Sud.<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">- 1936: 7 décembre, pour sa 25° traversée en deux ans avec cet hydravion quadri-moteur, il s’envole aux commandes du "Croix du Sud" vers sa destinée..<br /></div></div><br />Les débuts de la Poste Aérienne n’étaient pas qu’une aventure extraordinaire.
